Facebook Can Get You Sacked
For most people social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are a harmless way of keeping in contact with friends and family. The problem is sometimes people forget that they are not like a good old-fashioned letter that is sealed and delivered to the person it is intended for. Sometimes a conversation you intended to be private becomes very public and that can cause you a world of trouble.
A large supermarket chain in the UK recently faced embarrassment after a group of its employees were found to be making derogatory remarks about customers on their Facebook pages. Among the comments were insults about customers being smelly, stupid and irritating. One girl wrote about people who continually asked her if she worked there, she said she has always wanted to reply:
“‘No, I just think the Tesco uniform is the height of fashion. In fact, I saw it in Vogue only last week. Of course I work here, you moron!’
The customers of the store were irate, not surprisingly the company involved was not amused and at one point was even considering legal action against the employees.
In a social media gaffe that makes you wonder who exactly the morons are, another supermarket employee rang in sick for his evening shift and then went out out drinking. He may have gotten away with it but he chose to up load a photo of his very drunk self to his Facebook page, with the date on it. He is quoted as saying
“I was not drinking when I was meant to be working, I felt sick and rang in then, later, I felt better and went up town”
How many of us think that he is going to get away with that one? The most interesting thing is that it was one of his Facebook ‘friends’ that printed the page off and took it to management. Nice friends.
In yet another Facebook row Kimberley Swann (16) was actually sacked from her job because she wrote on her status page about how boring her job was. Her comments included ' all i do is shred holepunch n scan paper!!! omg!' and 'im so totally bord!!!' . She was fired and marched from the premises of the marketing company concerned.
The manager of the company who made the decision to fire the girl was quoted in major newspapers in the UK as saying “I saw her comments on Facebook and I didn’t want my company being in the news".Mmm, that appears to have worked out well for him then.
Perhaps these people need to return to writing letters, they may not be as modern and cutting edge but they sure do seem to cause a lot less trouble.
